Artist Biography

Mary Ruesch has been living and creating artwork in the Grand Rapids area for over 45 years. She earned a degree in Arts and Media from Grand Valley State University, and a BFA in Painting from Aquinas College. Mary held the position of Registrar for the Grand Rapids Art Museum for many years and was able to look very closely at the artwork that was brought in for exhibitions. As she was responsible for the entire collection, it gave her insight into many different types of paintings, drawings, and prints. She also learned the proper handling and care of such objects.

Mary credits her mentors for the skills she has acquired. She worked with Sharon Sandberg, her instructor at Aquinas, and Rick Stevens, a friend and fellow painter, to further refine her technique. Now, she has been experimenting with a new surface—paintings on copper. The natural patina from the metal adds an element of surprise and a feeling of experimentation to her translucent colors.
