Artist Biography

Barbara Schilling has been living and painting in the Grand Rapids area for over thirty years. Schilling is also a very masterful restorative artist, making repairs to others’ artworks that have suffered damage or the ravages of time. 

“I have been studying art my whole life. There has never been a time in my memory when communicating through my art was not important to me. Painting, to me, is about capturing the energy of a subject. I love strong textures, thick paint, and vibrant colors. It’s a search to find a balance between the abstract and the representational. I love the tactile feel of pushing thick paint around and juxtaposing harmonious color notes. I’ve moved away from a more literal translation of my subject to a more emotional response. My work is about bringing positive energy. To share my joy, my gratitude, and a sense of peace that we all need more of in our lives.”
